You want to get to know her?
| She loves to lay next to the couch and join in a
nap or take the opportunity to lick someone's legs. There are some typical positions, such as the belly position with head and tail stretched out like a torpedo and the 'wingfoot' detail. Note the hair between her pads. This is an Akita specialty. It allows her to walk as silently as a cat. However, on the tile floor in the house her long toe nails always make clicking sounds. The hair also makes her feet very slippery. They tend to slide away from her when she sits up straight (very embarrasing). |

Licking |
|
| Licking is a very serious undertaking. It
requires fullest concentration and care. Licking can be done starting from the foot
and working up to the knee, or vice versa. Certain areas of a leg need to be worked more than others. There might be a scratch, a bite or a something else that requires special attention. If intensive licking doesn't work, a certain way of nibbling the skin is in order. One of the side effect of frequent licking is the total removal of hair on the legs. Although, the primary purpose is probably grooming, recognition of the pack status and re-applying the odor of the pack. Note the equilateral triangle formed by the ears and nose. This is another one of the Akita features. |

Arm Wrestling |
|
| Sometimes, laying by the couch gets to be too
boring. The slightest move can trigger an outbreak of silliness such as arm
wrestling or more purposeful activities such as getting Papa to get up go to the kitchen. Touching her ears is one of the things that can lead to various reactions. If the ear touching turns into ear rubbing, she'll push her hear into the move and draw in air through the side of her mouth. If the ear is ticklish, she might go into a wrestling bout. Arm wrestling involves a lot of kicking with the back legs and playful biting. It ends abruptly when she jumps up and decides to be serious again. |

Going Out |
|
| She doesn't go out much, usually twice a day.
A certain ritual is involved with going out. First, she has to be asked if she wants to go out. Her answer is yes, when she gets up and requests her escorts by making one her special head motions. When Mama is home, she has to come and she gets the nod. When the boys are home, she tries to get them to come along also. Then she goes to the door and awaits the order "Give me your face." She then sticks her head through the chain and is ready to go. Then she stops on the stoop and looks over the situation. Are there any dogs, cats, or squirrels to barks at? Any people to greet? Is it raining? Is it hot? Then its on to the normal business. Pipi, smelling tracks, reading the messages on the lamp posts, etc. It's actually quite boring for us, but she always takes her time. The ordeal is not over when she returns home and decides to stay on the lawn to watch the neighbors' kids. Some of them are really nice to her. Girly appreciates her attention. |

| Quote from an Akita book:
"Akitas are known to be messy drinkers." This is true. She always
leaves a puddle on floor and the sound of her slurping is something else! See and hear for yourself. |
